Patient Journeys

Due to the nature of healing in general and N.E.T. (Neuro Emotional Technique) in particular, everyone’s patient journey is unique! That said, there are 4 broad paths that my typical patient travels through. To give you an idea of what those paths may look like, here they are:

Journey #1:

“I am already under care of another practitioner but have been referred for or am in need of very specific N.E.T. type care.”

In this case, you are likely already on a plan concerning diet, nutritional supplementation, exercise, and primary treatment modality (chiropractic, acupuncture, medication, etc.) but have reached a plateau in improvement or cannot seem to get past a particular problem that seems to have an emotional trigger. If you are under the care of a mental health professional, you may find that while you feel you have “done a ton of work” on an issue or “understand it intellectually,” your body persists in expressing specific stress-related symptoms. In cases like this, the focus here will be on the N.E.T., and allowing the primary treating practitioner to do their job of being the primary treating practitioner. For example, if you are under the care of a naturopath, then I’m not going to make recommendations to you about supplements. If you are under the care of a chiropractor, then I am not going to make recommendations concerning chiropractic care.

Example:  Nora is a 38 year-old professional who has been seeing an acupuncturist for headaches and allergies. Her symptoms have improved a lot thanks to the treatments along with diet modifications. However, she still experiences debilitating headaches that seem to appear whenever she attends parties with her girlfriends. At first, she thought that this was because of the alcohol. However, the headaches persisted even after she stopped drinking alcohol as part of her new health routine. Her acupuncturist recommended N.E.T.  Following a short, targeted treatment program of 5 N.E.T. sessions, she discovered that her body was reacting to a fear of becoming an “old maid” after witnessing the shunning of an unpartnered elderly aunt as a child. The N.E.T. treatments were able to “turn off” this trigger, and she was able to enjoy parties with her girlfriends without experiencing the headaches.

Journey #2:

“I am not under the care of another practitioner, but I generally take good care of myself, have experienced many different healing modalities over the years, and I think that I need N.E.T….”

In this case, it’s not your first time to the rodeo. Nevertheless, we will still start with a good consultation and get a sense of what is going on. After a review of the basics, we will focus on the suspected N.E.T.-relevant issue. Although you do a generally good job of keeping your health in order, some of the basics have slipped, and you need some support to get them back up. You may need a fresh look at your diet routine or supplements. You may need a chiropractic tune-up. You may want to weave N.E.T. into your general health maintenance routine. But for the most part, you are an independent person who is happy to manage their own self-care.

Example: Vanessa is a 45 year-old small business owner who has been taking care of herself all of her adult life. She never had great health insurance, so always did her best to stay healthy independently. She has found that her emotional state has a big impact on her health and found N.E.T. in her quest to find faster and better ways to access the underlying causes of her stress-related health challenges. She started receiving N.E.T. care, and through the process, discovered not only the emotional roots of her stress, but also that a previously overlooked physical component – a weakened liver – was compounding the emotions of anger, frustration and depression. While combining N.E.T. with supporting the liver nutritionally and structurally, Vanessa was able to greatly improve her health, which also resulted in a boost to her business. Vanessa’s treatment path started as a series of 5 intensive N.E.T. sessions, followed by ongoing periodic (about every 6 weeks) tune-up sessions to help monitor overall progress and continue to move the healing ball forward.

Journey #3:

“I am not under the care of another practitioner, and I have no idea what I need. I probably need a ton of stuff. 😬 Halp?”

As a specialist, I’m probably not the best first stop for someone who is completely new to the holistic health process! 😬 There are a lot of basics, and specialists are more expensive than generalists. Which is partly why I wrote my first book, The Issues are in the Tissues. This is a short book that covers all of the basics – structure, nutrition, emotions, toxicity and even spirituality. If you read this book – and it can be read in just a few hours – you will have an excellent grasp of the basics and a better idea of whether or not you want to jump in! That said, if you are fresh on your health journey, you will get to fill out an even more detailed health questionnaire and we will take a closer look at the biochemical side of your health. There’s just no getting around the fact that American food is terrible, and everyone who lives in America needs to work on their diet and nutrition if they truly want to be healthy. Chances are, you found me because you’re interested in sorting out the neuro-emotional part of what’s messing with your body. And/but… you’d be amazed to discover what your food does with your emotions!

Example: George is a 34 year old IT worker. He never paid much attention to his health, and that seemed just fine! He skated through this 20s eating whatever he liked, working and partying late at night, exercising here and there, and seemed none the worse for wear. However, he has started to experience back pain – sometimes severe - and fatigue that is new to him, along with an increasing sense of anxiety. His fiancée urged him to see a doctor, and he discovered that he has developed high blood pressure and rising cholesterol levels. He has been prescribed medication, but he is worried that there is something bigger going on. His dad died of a heart attack at age 53, and he doesn’t want to repeat that history. His most recent episode of severe back pain hit him after he reached over to pick up the TV remote. He couldn’t understand how this could happen. His fiancée pointed out that maybe it could be the stress of a year-end review at work following a terrible year. George just wants to get to the bottom of it and learn how to get his health turned around! After a detailed consultation and comprehensive exam (which included sending George out for some x-rays and lab work), George started on a care plan that included 2 visits a week for 6 weeks plus an overhaul of his diet. After the 6 weeks, he went through a re-evaluation process ad recalibration of his treatment, reducing the number of visits and adjusting his diet again, with some nutritional supplementation. He feels much more clear-headed, energetic and pain-free. He feels emotionally grounded. After another 6 weeks at the reduced schedule, George will go through another re-evaluation, likely having reached a stable plateau, and then will decide whether he wants to shift to an “as needed” frequency for symptomatic relief or a “preventative” routine of monthly tune-up style visits with occasional intensives as needed.

Journey #4:

“I want the biggest and best thing that you’ve got. I don’t have time to mess around. Show me your secret top shelf!”

The secret top shelf item is not for everyone. It’s the private all-day or dawn-to-dusk super session. The in-office version includes meal and snack breaks, and the dawn-to-dusk version usually involves a journey around the city as well as meal breaks. N.E.T. is unusual compared to other healing modalities in the sense that you can continuously “clear” things and still derive a benefit. (As opposed to a regular chiropractic adjustment, in which case it would be absurd – and probably dangerous – to continually adjust someone over the course of a day!) The purpose of an extreme session like this is either to (1) do an extreme deep dive that is almost impossible to do in a regular office visit without building to it over a number of separate visits or (2) to provide a tremendous amount of work in one shot for someone who lives prohibitively far away. Due to the intense nature of these all-day sessions, they may not be booked more than once every 6 months, and they are subject to a longer consultation and screening process. The cost ranges from $6000 inside of San Francisco to $10,000+ if I come to you, depending on travel time and distance.

Example #1: Aimee is a 45 year old entrepreneur who sold her company a few years ago and has been leading workshops in exotic locations ever since. She realizes that she keeps coming up against old personal wounds that manifest in physical forms despite her many years of therapy. She has money, but there are no options for quality mindbody care along her travels, and online sessions are not providing the depth she is looking for. During a break between her workshops, she flies to San Francisco for a dawn-to-dusk super session. She arrives on a Wednesday and gets settled in to her hotel. About 30 minutes before dawn, I pick her up on Thursday morning, and he head to the Presidio for a sunrise orientation and initial NET session on a quiet bench overlooking the Bay. We continue our journey of walking, outlining goals and muscle-testing throughout, to get a sense of the parameters of the core NECs at play, and we sit down or stand to clear the NEC’s. The journey through the city is a metaphor for the personal healing journey that Aimee is experiencing. We eat at places that evoke emotional memories for Aimee, and we clear food-related NECs if necessary. The day ends on the west side of the city with the setting sun (or the cold fog…) and a summary and final clearing of the most relevant NECs. I bring Aimee back to her hotel and later e-mail her a summary of the day.

Example #2: John is a 68 year old gay man who had a very successful career and raised a family. He did not come out as gay until the recent passing of his wife. Even though he has been in therapy ever since she passed 3 years ago, he has been experiencing increasing physical manifestations of stress. He has been prescribed antianxiety medication but is experiencing minimal relief. He feels that at his age, he doesn’t have time to spend years and years in therapy in order to feel better. He notices that the symptoms are worst in certain areas of his house and also in his old office, which he still visits often since his daughter now runs the company with his support. He books a day-long super session and requests that I come to his home and office in Santa Barbara. I fly down and book a hotel close to his home so that I can be there at 8am on the dot Monday morning. We start with a review of the plans for the day, get to work clearing some preliminary NECs, and then move on to the most stressful areas of the home: the kitchen and the bedroom. John is amazed at how fast he is able to shake the strange and terrible feeling that came with being in those rooms.  After clearing house-related NECs, we take a short snack break and then head over to the office. We clear the NECs that seem to trigger simply by being in the space. John’s daughter is there, and she agrees to serve as a “prop” and we are able to clear some of his NECs concerning letting go of the company to his daughter’s care. We break for lunch and discuss the goals for the rest of the day. We return to the office, where we work in a conference room to continue to clear his many NECs concerning his identity that has been chained to his company for years and the new process of detaching. Afterward, we stop in a park and clear some NECs on his new identity, and then return to his home for some final wrapping up. He has recently started dating a man named Jeffrey, who agreed to come over for a short “couples NET” exercise to help John. At the end of the day, John is exhausted, but happy, and feels a tremendous weight has been lifted from him.
