Happy 2010! Have you all made your New Year's Resolutions? (Of course not! And chances are, some of you have already BROKEN your resolutions!) I know, it sounds depressing already, but that's not my intent. I'm writing this entry because I've noticed that oftentimes, when someone is doing well in care, they are excited and keep going, but when they fall off the wagon -- whether it be with food, exercise, getting adjusted, etc. -- and lose some ground, they get discouraged, and sometimes quit. They figure, what's the point? I'll never be perfect. And guess what? It's true -- the part about never being perfect, that is. Does that mean that it's therefore pointless to take care of yourself or to do good things for your body? Of course not. Health versus disease isn't really about 0% or 100%. It's more like 49% versus 51%. What you're going to manifest in terms of your health (and your life) is what shows up when the balance tips just past that halfway point, to where the scales tip to one side or another. Do you have to give up chocolate forever? Of course not. But where's that 51% needle pointing for you right now? Think about the history changing 1% (or less!) of the 2000 U.S. presidential election. (Sorry I made you think about that, actually...) Anyway, go ahead and make your resolutions, and do your best. Don't kick yourself for not being perfect, and don't get caught in the losing pursuit of perfection. Aim for excellence. Go ahead and write down your top 10 health goals for 2010. And check them off when you achieve them. It feels good! One year, I actually wrote down 100 goals for the year. I lost track of the list, of course, and found it by accident a couple of years later. To my surprise, I'd actually achieved about 65% of those goals. I guess if that list had been a school test, then it would have made me a D student, but wow, I achieved 65 goals for that year! Goal-setting is key for success in any endeavor, and your health is no different. Happy 2010, and rejoice - we can ALL hit 51% right?!
